We thought that aging is the result of our chronological age.
This chronological age doesn’t mean anything because aging is inside our cells and
especially in our DNA. It is the origin of aging.

Why we are getting old? Aging is caused by 3 things:

DNA damage

Shortening of telomeres

Depletion of the stock of stem cells.

1 – DNA damage

We call it, progressive senescence because it settles down very slowly without been seeing because there are 200k-300k DNA damages per day.

The damage is of 2 types:

A – Due to the environment
Infections, UV rays, inadequate nutrition, pollution, heavy metals, tobacco, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle.

B – Due to internal attacks:

a – free radicals or oxidation
b – Inflammation which is due to cancers, diabetes, heart disease, insulin, cortisol, interleukin 6 (IL-6), TNFalpha, Alzheimer’s, auto-immune disease, obesity, bad eicosanoids.
c – Glycation: a lot of sugar in the body.
This advanced glycation will produce a lot of damage, blocking proteins that can no longer move and become paralyze by sugar that surrounds them, leading to aging and wrinkles.

Why we are getting old? and why is this important?

You know cells are dividing all the time. When the cell divides, the DNA divides, which is normal.
If the DNA is damaged, if the genetic codes are missing, the proteins will be missing and therefore we will have premature aging and chronic diseases.
Luckily we have, in the body, a maintenance service (DNA maintenance service) which is very sophisticated and will repair the damage.

2 – Shortening of telomeres

Telomere is the duplicative senescence, the aging of multiplication
Telomeres are the small caps that are found at the end of chromosomes and DNA to protect them against physical accidents.
They are repetitive sequences of DNA at the end of chromosomes.

The problem is that each time they divide, these telomeres get shorter but we always have the same sequence and the same codes. But after 5-6 divisions, there are no more telomeres or caps.

And, when a cell can no longer divide, it becomes senescent and this is why we are getting old.

3 – Depletion of the stock of stem cells

Stem cells are the fountain of youth.
The properties of stem cells:
a – make new cells
b – regenerate damaged tissues
c – to multiply

From birth, the red marrow takes over for the production of hematopoietic (cells in the blood) and somatic stem cells.
